Dive Trips with Infants

Dive Trips with Infants

I think the most convenient period to travel with infants is, when they can’t walk yet and they’re still on breast milk. As long as the baby is with you and you have enough nappies, there isn’t much to worry about.  If you need to leave them behind to a caretaker for a few hours, just take a pump and leave some milk in the fridge to be given in case the baby is hungry. If you’re on a boat, a cold bag and some ice packs would do. Our daughter was 4 months old when I went to my first dive trip as a mother. I had been dreaming about diving for a year and I really really wanted to see Sipadan....

Shark attack due to fins?

Shark attack due to fins?

"So now they claim , split fins can cause Sharks to Attack ?" But the chum in the water is perfectly safe :) Newswatch Shark bite a 'freak accident' 29 June 2011 - 09:18 Author: Lauren Holley The incident in which a shark bit a research diver on the South Coast yesterday has been described as a terrible freak accident by the company that took the man out to sea. 22-year-old Paolo Stanchi, from the US, suffered critical injuries after a three metre dusky shark bit him while he was diving at Aliwal Shoal. The owner of Blue Wilderness Dive Expeditions, Mark Addison, says he believes...

Third Day at Barracuda Point

Third Day at Barracuda Point

It shouldn’t be a surprise to you now that we were at Barracuda Point again on our third day at Sipadan.  We actually made two of the three dives to the same spot. When we passed that favorite corner of ours at 15 meters and slowly ascend through the valley, we saw lots of turtles gathered around a pinnacle. At first sight, we thought that this was the red light district for turtles. I even felt sorry for one of the guys that got kicked out by three other turtles. We were waiting for some action, but apparently that was a spa rather than a red light zone. It was a cleaning station and the turtles...

Second Day at Barracuda Point

Second Day at Barracuda Point

After that mind blowing experience the other day, we really didn’t want to dive at any other Dive Sites at Sipadan. We wanted to spend all our dives in Baraccuda Point. Actually, if they could keep sending us full tanks and food, I wouldn’t mind spending the whole day in that corner at 15 meters, just watching the open blue. On our second day at Sipadan, guess where we wanted to go? Yes, Baraccuda Point, well guessed J And it was the best choice ever again. When we made our entry, the group started heading down whereas I stayed at 5 meters and approached the huge shadows I’d seen from...

What’s going on at Barracuda Point?

What’s going on at Barracuda Point?

We've been diving in Sipadan for a long time. There has been times it had amazed us, especially Tunc has seen its high times staying on the island and watching whales, mantas and marlins passing by. For me, it will always be special being my first destination in Asia and witnessing the first steps of my babyboy. We've had lots of other favorite destinations after moving to Indonesia. Diving in those wonderful sites is an amazing experience however it becomes harder to get satisfaction out of any dive after you see sites like Raja Ampat, Komodo, Manado, Derawan, etc. We were in Sipadan last...

East Kalimantan

East Kalimantan

Well after a 2 hours ride on the river and on the open ocean, I have reached Derawan island and checked in to my room. It is a nice resort except that the food could be a little bit better. The diving: The most important thing is the diving here ! This area has some very special dives to offer, which from my point of view as a photographer, are excellent. I do travel quiet frequently, alone mainly, doing hotel inspections for my groups to dive and photograph. When I am alone and I don't have my wife as an underwater model with me, the success rate of good photos is %10. But here, I got some...

On The Way To East Kalimantan

On The Way To East Kalimantan

I am sitting in a hotel room, trying to figure out what to write. Let's start by trying to explain how I always feel when I go on an expedition. I have flight anxiety, and believe me Indonesian Air carriers don't ease it up. The 2 hour flight from Jakarta to Balikpapan in a brand new 737 -900 was extremely comfortable. I was trying to get a glimpse of the island of Borneo (Kalimantan) after the first hour of the flight. Somehow I must have missed the shore, and still thinking that we had the ocean under our feet , a massive river made his appearance in the middle of the Ocean. I missed it ! It wasn't...

Poseidon Xstream Deep90

Poseidon Xstream Deep90

Back in 2002 , I tought of switching from a regular regulator to something more extreme and reliable .There was big hype going on about Poseidon Regulators , everybody was showing off with them.Comments on how easy they were to breath ,that going deep wasn't a problem , they were reliable , needed less servicing were flying around. Finaly I was convinced and I treated my self with an Xstream Deep 90. Well the first dives or so I was thinking " hmm not that easy to breath actualy " a couple of dives later " ooops where does that water come from now " more dives later " and now it's free flowing"...

Anti-fog tree

A new mask can be a diver’s nightmare. You may try all the tricks, brush it, scrub it, burn it, spit in it, try all the antifog solutions and you may still end up with a blurry sight the minute you put your head under the water. I had a lovely Aqualung mask, almost completely transparent, with soft silicones and huge, one piece glass. I would have a wide angle of sight if I could manage to complete a dive with it. It would get fog all over a minute later and had to change to my 10 year old, ugly but comfortable mask. We were diving in Bunaken and I asked our dive guide if he had a strong anti-fog...

A Night Time Visit

A Night Time Visit

I was literally running to the Jetty to get a last photo of the amazing sunset Raja Ampat offered us on our last day as suddenly my friend called me back from the kitchen area of the resort. The ladies at the kitchen were just disposing some organic food waste into the water where the black tip babies, apolet sharks and various other fish feasted on them. However that was not wht he was showing me,  as I came closer to the kitchen I noticed a grey  huge fat  body underneath. For the first second I couldn't categorize it in my head until I realized what it was . A Dugong ! I knew that there...
